Millones de peces aparecieron muertos en el sureste de Australia en un fenómeno que las autoridades y los científicos atribuyeron a las inundaciones y el clima cálido.
Millones de peces muertos y en estado de creciente putrefacción bloquean un tramo de río en una remota localidad en el interior de Australia, que atraviesa una intensa ola de calor. Videos publicados en redes sociales muestran embarcaciones abriéndose paso en un mar de peces muertos que cubren casi por completo la superficie fluvial.

El gobierno de la región de Nueva Gales del Sur dijo el viernes que «millones» de peces murieron en el río Darling cerca de la localidad de Menindee, en el tercer episodio de este tipo que ocurre en la zona desde 2018. «Es horrible, de verdad. Hay peces muertos hasta donde llega la vista», dijo a la AFP Graeme McCrabb, residente de Menindee.
La población de peces en el río se disparó debido a unas inundaciones recientes, pero ahora están muriendo a causa de «los bajos niveles de oxígeno en el agua (hipoxia) a medida que el nivel del agua retrocede«, dijo el gobierno local. »El tiempo cálido actual en la región exacerba la hipoxia, dado que el agua caliente contiene menos oxígeno que el agua fría, y los peces necesitan más oxígeno a temperaturas más altas«, agregó.

Según avanzó el diario ‘The Australian’, las primeras hipótesis de los expertos apuntaron a que la muerte masiva pudo deberse a factores ambientales como la temperatura o la salinidad del agua, así como los niveles de oxígeno o la introducción de enfermedades o contaminantes en el agua.
