¿Está en el ADN latino el secreto para retrasar el envejecimiento?
Científicos de la Universidad de California, EEUU, analizaron las muestras genéticas de casi 6 mil sujetos de siete etnias diferentes. Descubrieron que las personas con “sangre” latinoamericana viven una media de tres años más. Comienzan estudios para reconocer los componentes moleculares que generan el fenómeno.
Se lo conoce como “la paradoja hispana”. Diferentes estudios de salud -realizados en Estados Unidos- aseguran que los latinos poseen índices más altos en factores de riesgo como la obesidad o la diabetes, entre otras enfermedades. Sin embargo, una investigación a nivel molecular reveló que a pesar de estos problemas envejecen más lentamente.
El estudio, realizado en la Universidad de California en Los Ángeles y publicado en la revista Genome Biology, demostró que la raza latina envejece a un ritmo más lento que otros grupos étnicos. Esto podría ayudar a los científicos a entender cómo retrasar el proceso de avance de edad en todo el mundo.
De acuerdo con los datos de los Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades, los latinos viven una media de tres años más que los caucásicos, con una esperanza de vida de 82 frente a 79. Y a cualquier edad, los adultos sanos latinos se enfrentan a un riesgo 30 por ciento menos de muerte que otro grupo.
Con esta información, el equipo de especialistas, liderados por el profesor de genética humana Steve Horvath, utilizó varios biomarcadores, incluyendo un reloj biológico, para realizar un seguimiento de un cambio epigenético relacionado con el envejecimiento en el genoma. La epigenética es el estudio de los cambios en la función de los genes que no afectan la secuencia del ADN.
Los investigadores analizaron 18 conjuntos de datos sobre muestras de ADN de casi 6.000 personas. Los participantes representaban a siete etnias diferentes: afroamericanos, caucásicos, asiáticos del este, latinos, dos grupos africanos y un grupo de indígenas llamado Tsimane, cuya tierra originaria es Bolivia, aunque estén genéticamente relacionados con los latinos.
Cuando los científicos examinaron el ADN de la sangre, lo cual revela la salud del sistema inmunológico de una persona, quedaron sorprendidos por los resultados. En particular, los expertos se dieron cuenta de que, después de considerar las diferencias en la composición de las células, la sangre de los latinos y los Tsimane envejecía más lentamente que los otros grupos.
Además, el reloj biológico midió la edad de las mujeres latinas como 2,4 años menor que la de las demás de la misma edad después de la menopausia. Por otra parte, se descubrió que la sangre y los tejidos del cerebro de los hombres se deterioran más rápido que los de las mujeres dentro de cada grupo étnico, lo que podría explicar por qué las mujeres tienen en general una esperanza de vida mayor que la de los hombres.
“Nuestros hallazgos sugieren que los factores genéticos o ambientales relacionados con la etnicidad pueden influir en la rapidez con que una persona envejece y cuánto tiempo viven”, sostuvo Horvath, a la vez que afirmó que “la tasa de envejecimiento más lenta de los latinos ayuda a neutralizar los riesgos de salud más altos, particularmente los relacionados con la obesidad y la inflamación”.
