Scottie Scheffler, el actual número uno del mundo en golf, fue detenido este viernes por la policía mientras intentaba evadir un control de tránsito en su camino al PGA Championship, el segundo torneo Major del año, celebrado en Valhalla, en la ciudad de Louisville, Kentucky. El golfista estadounidense de 27 años, reciente campeón del Masters de Augusta, fue esposado y llevado a una comisaría, donde se registró su ingreso y se le tomó la clásica foto con el uniforme de convicto color naranja, imagen que rápidamente se viralizó a nivel mundial.
Horas después, Scheffler, quien es considerado el nuevo amo y señor del golf, fue liberado y logró llegar a tiempo para unirse a sus compatriotas Wyndham Clark y Brian Harman en la segunda vuelta del Major en Valhalla. Según testigos y medios estadounidenses, Scheffler fue arrestado por intentar evadir las órdenes de un agente que controlaba el tráfico debido a un accidente en la zona, del cual el golfista no estaba involucrado.
El periodista Jeff Darlington, de ESPN, capturó en video el momento de la detención, que rápidamente se difundió y sacudió la mañana en Valhalla. "No hay nada que puedas hacer, irá a la cárcel", afirmó un oficial de policía a Darlington mientras registraba la escena. El video, compartido en la red X (anteriormente conocida como Twitter), muestra a Scheffler con las manos esposadas detrás de su espalda, siendo arrestado por dos policías, y se le escucha decir: "¿Puedes ayudarme?".
Las imágenes, con las luces de los patrulleros iluminando la oscuridad de la madrugada, muestran a un agente gritando a los testigos para que mantuvieran la distancia. "Ahora mismo está yendo a la cárcel y no hay nada que puedan hacer al respecto", dice otro oficial en el video, subrayando la seriedad de la situación.
