La cepa británica y la sudafricana se expanden por el mundo
Existe consenso entre los científicos en que la variante hallada por primera vez en Londres y el sureste de Inglaterra es más contagiosa, aunque se conoce poco sobre su nivel de letalidad.
El 22 de enero, el primer ministro británico, Boris Johnson, anunció que parecía ser más mortífera, aunque los especialistas todavía son más prudentes y prefieren esperar más investigaciones.
“Los resultados son preliminares y se necesitan más análisis para corroborar esas conclusiones”, indicó en el mismo sentido la OMS.
Las variantes son versiones diferentes del coronavirus inicial, que aparecen con el tiempo, a causa de varias mutaciones. Es un fenómeno normal en la vida de cualquier virus, consignó la agencia de noticias AFP.
Desde su aparición, se observaron numerosas mutaciones del SARS-CoV-2, la gran mayoría, sin consecuencias. Sin embargo, algunas pueden darle ventajas, como una mayor transmisibilidad.
